The smartphone is just over 15 years old, and 70% of people on the planet own one. But there’s reason to believe their days are numbered. Where do smartphones go from here? And what new technologies might take its place? There are a couple of directions this could go. From mixed reality headsets and glasses to AI assistants, the smartphone as we know it is about to change.

Bro, earth is not a ball! LoL!
Watching this on my twenty dollar android 😅
I"m one of the 3/10 who don't have a smart phone, and never will. I live in a real world, not a game.
i have a dumb phone (light phone 2) and i think the solution to "reconnecting" is ditching the all-in-one device that happens to be a phone. strapping AI camera goggles to my face would only isolate us. wearing a brooch that is recording audio and video all the time is the worst tech crime. we're out here burning waymos and you want to become one?
you totally buried the lead here. your phone uses all its sensors to build a profile on you, the camera on the front senses your micro expressions, and the infra red monitors facial blood flow, the velosity sensors tell what kind of movements are doing, the 3 lenses build a 3 domentional model of where you are and where you go, the phone at all times is obviously logging subjective works, that is why you see ads you just talked about with a friend, there are even high piched signals generated above your hearing range that can trigger fuctions and have data sent back, this profile is among other things make you the perfect marketing target for , well you name it, so now you ad the ai pin to it and now not only is all that data being mined but now that camera always pointed at every on you know builds a recognizable list of the people you associate with, imagine the problems you may face when targeted by bad guys. you really did not to touch on your title at all, there is more in your phone that you signed up for because you did not read the 4 page fine print aggrement on the phone and all you apps…. you have no idea the degree of data collecrion.
Tools to dehumanize the rest of human life? I will not be teaching their children,,,!
I hope we can do a lot better than this. This is very underwhelming.

Not sure why i no longer get notifications for this channel. Occasionally ill stumble across one of your videos and watch. Weird because ive been subbed to your channel forever.
RIP HUMANE…
You’re 100% correct. The future is AR (reality overlaid with digital).
The form factor will be glasses.
As with early phones, GPS navigation etc, the limiting factors are display specs and limitations, size, weight, BOM Cost, processor speed and performance limitations (power + heat), memory availability and cost, data transmission…. To name but a few.
We will get there.
Early real time + moving maps consumer GPS Navi was introduced in the early late 1990s-early 2000s With stand alone devices and by 2018 navigation had moved to online navigation(e.g Google maps and similar). Sport/biometrics or in-vehicle and fleet tracking. Consumer stand alone devices (sport/biometric devices excepted) were obsolete.
I expect AR will go the same way. Give us 15 years and the tech will be mature.😊
Smart phones will continue to be the standard for a while longer. After that cyber implants will come and replace them.
Like the presenter says, the shaving supply and implement companies have been screwing us for years. I did the simple maths of what it was costing me to shave for a year. Outrageous! Solution: I use Great Granddad's three-piece Gillette razor made about 110 years ago. It uses standard, old style, double-edged blades. If I hunt the internet carefully, they can be bought in bulk fairly cheaply. It gives the best shave of anything I've ever used — including later model, old style razors from the '30's and '50's. So as soon as I found a blades supply …..!!
Here in mid-2025, AI Pin turned out to be a fraud. The device had overheating problems, before being shown at trade shows execs would cool it down with ice packs. Staff were fired if they criticised the device, because Chaudry and Biogiorno prefered a culture of 'positiveness not critique'. So many employees concerns during design and development were not listened to. They riased $250m and sold for $110m to HP earlier this year. If you owned the device – ti doesn't work now, because they shut down all of the servers and deleted all of your data.
They were featured in Time magazine's top-200 innovations of 2024, two Time board members were also funders of AI Pin…..
Oh, and their charger was also recalled because of concerns it would catch on fire.
This is a classic case of falling in love with an idea, and not falling in love with the problem.
Shameful transition to whoever give you money for this video. You just lost my subscription. Also it's pathetic how many of jobs old employees are trying to stand up like they know something and they're going to do something great because they knew the man. I'd like to see them succeed without using his name.
1990-2015: phone innovation , in just 20years
2015-2025: we are not seeing new since all the innovation is inside, CPU, RAM, Storage . all of them are getting faster and smaller
The Humane AI Pin has aged like fine milk.
Hear me out…
The Smart Pager.
The next big thing will be projection displays in either ocular form, or a wearable device on your arm. Then many years after that id assume technology would begin to become a part of us literally. Offering Surgical Implants for your device. And A.i. is going to be infused in each of these newer technologies. 2030 will be the start of everything sci-fi, becoming reality… wait for it
Eyephone
Did you think through the "this camera pinned to my shirt is always on"? Because if you think youre going to get a good video of something with a device hanging from your shirt, I dont think youve thought it through at all.
Also, a BUNCH of companies have created "AI Pins". They all suck. The reality is that you cant do much with them, and the lack of interface and the need to be constantly connected means another phone bill with about 5% of the functionality of the phone.
Is it here yet? The end of smartphones?
I like a barrier inbetween me and the current tech world
Neuralink
Bell stole the design from someone else.
The premise that something better is just around the corner is a fallacy… we are still waiting for something better than a wheel or electricity to materialize 😉
You're gonna need to to define your understanding of the word “near” in order for me to get overly concerned.
The Smart Phone is so much more than well a “phone” there is no way the Mobile will ever be replaced by current technology!
When I went to the Mario land in Universal Hollywood the Mario Kart ride had you using AR glasses when “Racing” against Mario and friends or Bowsers kids and while I don’t know how it works but I imagine something like that would be amazing to have in every day life.
Fair phone. European way.
The next step in smartphones is the hand terminal from The Expanse. Holographic display, direct interaction with computers, being able to see the road while you're texting and driving… but seriously, I think smartglasses are the next step. Once voice controls and power supply are improved, headsup display through glasses will take over.
I’ve got it!
An iPhone watch!
Actually smartphones are getting worst. My redmi 14c cant run split screen, while my 5 years old galaxy a20 can
A year after this video came out and I have still yet to get a smart phone.
Companies are treating our privacy like it's their own property.
There is the pesky little problem of ease of use and interfacing that any potential replacement for the smartphone has to contend with. Part of why the touch screens of smartphones are so dominant is just that, ease of use and interfacing. The high speed interactivity does wonders for accessing short-burst dopamine sources…
As far as the AI assisted tech goes, I can't help but envision something inspired by Digimon and Megaman NTwarriors. Imagine having an AI companion on your personal device that you could sync to trusted devices, kiosks and projectors to interact with in environments like home or work. If the tech becomes compact enough, maybe all we would need is a wearable smartwatch to house our personal AI's core model, and having it sync'ed to other devices would allow it to operate on that device faster and with more power, keeping the primary device lite in terms of energy needs.
A true international plan.
You really need to check out the reviews of that Humane AI pin.
The first smartphone wasn't an iPhone, not by a long chalk.
Perhaps the next tech in smartphone is not the smartphone itself but the power that it needs and some around it
We can take that inspiration from watches, latest most technological advanced quartz watch is the one which runs on Solar and is practically never goes out of battery till the sun is there.
The next big tech in smartphone and infact in any tech device would be something which merges nano tech, quantum chips and nuclear power also a tech which can work anywhere out in the space without being affected by the bombardment of energy particles and solar winds.
In my opinion smartphone design peaked with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the LG V20.
No they can add a mini projector
I'm pro: I don't need a Screen for entertainement – I'm happy with Audio and the Benefits of not having to start up a computer in order to look something up or to navigate somewhere.
But I'm also pro: I want a camara with me that is only on when I want it (I have a cover on mine) and i do NOT want AI all over my shit. Which it is mostly too late anyway as I'm still using my Phone and there is no way that's private anymore.
The pin would cater to some of my wishes, but contradict the others… so… Meh. I'm still flirting with the Idea of going Dumbphone.
