Today I’m testing out three As Seen on TV tech accessories to see if they work. Products include Bell+Howell Spin Power, Power Pod, and Desk Call. Note: I said that the 25,000 mAh charger was the same price as Power Pod, but its price has gone up since I purchased it 18 months ago! It’s now about $36.

  1. I know im late but just wanna say with the desk call if you have a phone wallet or ring or popsocket you couldn't use n it be nice if they made one with deeper legs on the bottom of the phone holder part for that (not the stand part) i use a popsocket wallet n i can't use any stands so far.

  2. BTW you don't want to keep using old power strips, the power surge protector built in wears out over time and could be less effective. You should aim to replace your strips every 3-5 years, or what the manufacturer recommends.

  3. One thing i kinda wish larger battery banks had is a way to clip the phone onto the bank and somewhere to wrap the cable, so i could have one massive brick instead of my phone with a charger hangng out and going into my pocket with a cable dangling, I like the power pod, but wish it had more juice, but i guess it's emergency power

  4. The power pod is a great chick magnet. Let me explain. In Switzerland you can buy a train ticket from an app on your phone. When the conductor comes and checks tickets you have to show him the bar code or IR code. A year ago a woman was sitting across from me and when the conductor came her iPhone died. I have a power pod knock off on my key chain. I offered to charge her phone enough for the conductor to see the code. Otherwise she would have had to pay a $150 fine! We ended up enjoying a coffee on the train and became friends.

  5. Thanks for checking the tilt down on the Desk call so I don’t waste my money on it. most of these devices don’t tilt low enough for shorter individuals and children. These companies don’t think we facetime or make other online calls that we want to sit for and not stand up for the whole meeting..

  6. You might want to look at efficiencies when transferring stored power to a device before making conclusions about how good powerbanks are… It's just not fair to judge without knowing what you should expect efficiency wise.

Also the cost is partly due to the small size. Compact devices get a small premium in pricing. Seems to apply to pretty much everything. But yes it's not very useful though you don't need much in emergencies and that would be ideal for them.

  7. Although I’m completely sure your assessment of the big power bank being all-around better is accurate, I just wanted to mention that the phone battery % is not linear. Each percent is not equivalent. Phone manufacturers manipulate the displayed percentage so that there is more or less actual battery at certain percentages, so that the user experience is more “friendly” in different circumstances. For example, when some phones are in the 20% range, there is actually more battery left than simply 1/5th of the total. Also phones are often programmed to stay at 100% longer than they’re actually at 100%.

With this in mind, to get to 29%, may have required more power to get to than the percentage itself would make it seem. Maybe a better test would be to have the phone at 50%, and then go from there, for both tests, so all parameters are controlled and they’re working under the same conditions. Anyway, great stuff, just wanted to put this out there in case it helps!

  8. Our family history club bought one for folk to plug multiple laptops we hound if you didnt unroll the cable completely the cable left inside got very hot so you need to unroll more than required for saftey

  9. I use a different version of the spin power, everything is the same except the outlets are on the top for mine and the USB ports are in the bottom, it is fantastic, I use it for my ps4, my laptop, my monitor, and my router. And sometimes I plug my phone into the USB ports

  10. Just a quick note on battery charging. The way these batteries are build these days, a battery always charges faster when being empty and the charging speed decreases the more you come close to 100%>

  11. the desk call has 2 major flaws. the pinchers eventually wear at pressure points that touch the phone and break as the plastic used is not very thick so it gets weak with use. secondly if you have a thick case the phone does not hold very well. I have a zero lemon case for my phone that makes it about 1 inch thick because it contains a powerbank behind the phone. It makes my phone like a brick and the desk call can not hold it well, it slides out of the pinchers and does not stay in place.

I found that a magnetic holder works far better as you don't have the pinchers to deal with and the magnet is way strong enough to hold any size phone.

  12. My "desk call" at work is my fedora on the desk. Holds my phone perfectly vertically and horizontally. At home you could easily make something out of old cardboard boxes. Waste of 20 bucks.
