Australian scientists from the University of NSW have set a new world record for the efficiency of commercially-viable solar cells.

Dr Graham Phillips investigates new technology that is able to convert more than 40 per cent of the sun’s light into electricity. This is more than double the efficiency of today’s domestic rooftop solar panels, and could eventually lead to cheaper sources of renewable energy. #ABCcatalyst

  1. 7:17 How can the small solar panel produce ten times the amount of energy of a conventional solar panel if the conventional solar panel is harvesting 15 to 20 percent of the sun's radiation? If this claim was true the small solar panel would be harvesting between 150 to 200 per cent of the sun's radiation which is mathematically impossible.

  2. so we get rid of the big solar panel's, and replace them with giant mirrors? ya, no.. How much petroleum was used to mine the gallium arsenide? Regular cells use large quantities of petroleum to be mined, as it is.

  3. Historic in magnitude and paradigm shifting in a great positive way. Thanks for this great video and to all those in Australia! After 4 years I hope too it can be augmented in sync should there be yet more innovations.
