Australian scientists from the University of NSW have set a new world record for the efficiency of commercially-viable solar cells.
Dr Graham Phillips investigates new technology that is able to convert more than 40 per cent of the sun’s light into electricity. This is more than double the efficiency of today’s domestic rooftop solar panels, and could eventually lead to cheaper sources of renewable energy. #ABCcatalyst

7:17 How can the small solar panel produce ten times the amount of energy of a conventional solar panel if the conventional solar panel is harvesting 15 to 20 percent of the sun's radiation? If this claim was true the small solar panel would be harvesting between 150 to 200 per cent of the sun's radiation which is mathematically impossible.
Sun is inoff to make light for world.
When will this cell will be available in the market?
Any update on this story? 6yrs later…are they available to buy?
so we get rid of the big solar panel's, and replace them with giant mirrors? ya, no.. How much petroleum was used to mine the gallium arsenide? Regular cells use large quantities of petroleum to be mined, as it is.
I have seen this solar mirror array. Only from outside the fence however. It is extremely impressive. I could say where but I will respect the researchers.
or license it overseas for $$$
you should open source cooling system before big coal gas and oil whacks ya :p
Very complex……
The max of solar energy is a full 625w per meter squared.
use the heat from cooling the efficent cells to drive a steam turbin that also produce electrisity?
Any poisonous byproducts of the manufacturer of these expensive cells? That’s gotta be a big drawback.
This would be great!
Mirrors raises dust problem. Also a birds and insects would get fried there.
365x is more than max efficency and they explained as if it were 7x …
The comments are no longer disabled!
If one cell generates about 3000 watts, how much of that is lost to the cooling system?
Norway group using their electric car's batteries to store solar for their homes
Historic in magnitude and paradigm shifting in a great positive way. Thanks for this great video and to all those in Australia! After 4 years I hope too it can be augmented in sync should there be yet more innovations.
