Midway through developing my first completely independent iOS App and I finally have to face the decision of what I want to do to make money from this project. I thought it would be a great opportunity to share to people that might have less experience in mobile, iOS or android development about what are some of the most common options out there to make money from your app projects. There’s a lot of information out there, and it will always depend on the particular project, but I decided to chip with the ideas that floated through my mind when deciding how to monetize my project and eventually where I ended up with it.

Let’s face it, making money off of the hard work you put into a personal project to make all the time you put in worth it is one of the biggest questions you’ll come across in your own process, hopefully this sheds some light on some of the ideas that are available to you and helps you get started on your own process.

Keep in mind, monetization of mobile apps, and particularly independently made ones are a subject of their own, if you are working on another medium, like a game or a website, there’s even more options at your disposal to make things work for you!

  1. i just finished building an app but as you mentioned feel uncomfortable doing paid subscriptions….however i need to make money. .what about donation based model where you require a minimum amount to be raised each month…if the goal is met then everyone can access the app…if not, the app is locked (noone can access app) until the amount is raised…i dont see anyone trying a model like this.

  2. I was doing initial research on iOS deployment and it came to my attention that the up-front fees are quite HIGH: requires an Apple Developer account at $99/year, plus a MacBook to even have that account, on top of a lot of very hard work. Android seems a lot easier. All those fees really make it difficult to publish a free app… your thoughts on this?
