Over the years, cell phones have come in many shapes and sizes. From bulky phones with antennas and handsets that flip open, to modern devices connected to the internet, the mobile phone market has evolved dramatically since its creation in 1973.

Since then, phones have become more than just gadgets that people can play around with. They’re our calendar, our camera. In a lot of ways, they’re core to how we live our lives, and we’ve developed a dependence on them.

But innovation in the smartphone industry seems to have reached its peak. Beyond flashy cameras and more efficient chips, phone makers are struggling to find ways to entice consumers the same way they did years ago.

“We now live in this kind of sea of smartphone sameness,” said Ben Wood, chief analyst at tech research firm CCS Insight.

“I think we have moved to a point now with mobile phones where people aren’t kind of rushing out saying, ‘I really want to get that new phone,’” Wood said. “In many cases, it’s almost a distress purchase.”

  1. Huawei's New Trifold as they call is one of my fav pick . It can unfold 2 times into tab and add keyboard for like a laptop exp. It's still new , but I'd like to see that tech mature. I don't like foldables because I have ipad and phone. But if my ipad dies and tech matures, I'd buy a trifold , I can skip a phone + tab cost and still draw.

  2. Could blood biometric entangle your phone and you forever even it lost it can message to router to get back to you. The small needle like diabetic test strip can do entangle your biometric to phone and integrate with phone permanently

  3. Apple being scared to make major design changes just shows the company isn’t confident in a variety of things and it shows complacency (by all means I understand) but consumers will flock to buy anything apple so if they make a foldable phone or make a big jump in design people would run to it merely for the sake of change! -iphone 14 pro max user who sees no need to upgrade to a newer iphone for the next 5-7 years (considering getting a z fold 6 for something fresh)

  4. To be fair, most of what the industry is now is just “copy whatever Apple and Samsung are doing” and thats it. People know what they want, the market knows what they want, the point of making gimmicky phones just for them to not sell is unfortunately not a thing.

People are happier spending more on a more premium device that is supported and lasts longer, than a phone that quickly falls behind the requirements of the modern world. My second gen iPhone SE is still going strong, im not really missing anything from buying the newest iPhone or Galaxy, it would only be an inconvenience to buy a new phone.

  5. I always believed early iphones were made for businessmen as they felt premium and had a relatively small battery life( businessmen don't use their phone that much). Nowadays most people ask for high battery life. This indicates how much their lives are dependent on it.

  6. I think the next iteration of smartphone progress will be based on battery life. It is not about 100 000 mAh battery, it is about technologies of self charging to smartphone. The manufactor Garmin has the techonology "Solar" which makes self charging of device from the sun which help smartwatch boost their time of work. On my opinion these technologies will be future of smartphone.
