It feels like autonomous cars have been “right around the corner” for the last decade in a never-ending cycle of automakers promising their arrival. Well, if Mercedes-Benz has anything to do with it, that might finally be true: The brand’s new Drive Pilot will be the first Level 3 autonomous system to hit the U.S. market. Edmunds’ Brian Wong gets behind the wheel — and takes his hands off it — in this video, where we put Drive Pilot to the test for the first time.

  1. Oh dear god. Another Subscription based car feature that only works when you add money. How about the heated seats? Are they also a subscription feature? Plus, the restrictions are crazy. Most people will only be able to use it for very limited parts of their trip. Saying that, does the Level 2 system offer navigation etc. like Tesla's FSD?

  2. Why is this categorized as level 3 and current Tesla still level 2? Tesla is now hands free, it changes lanes, it enters and exits freeways, stop and goes, etc. without any driver control. I’m asking because if Mercedes is superior in autonomous driving, I might switch

  3. Considering all the problems with the software on my current S-class I don't even try to imagine the problems will occur on this actually in praxis useless system
Mercedes shouldn't charge you but rather give you an insensitive to have that installed and be their guinea pig

  4. More funny is when people defending it says it's 100% safe and no accidents using this yet. But there's probably only a handful of these cars on the road (Google says they sold at least 65 compared to 900k Teslas with FSD) and like 5% of the time it even meets the conditions for use. That shows you it has not been truly tested in real world conditions. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of thousands of FSD Teslas on the road with real life data. They love to mention that one person killed by a Tesla, walking their bike in fast lane in the dark. And Tesla FSD is always improving with the more real life data it gains from people actually using it.

  5. First to have level 1? Now I know that's a lie with Tesla having the first vehicle to have a ton of us driving features ever. And you can't even use the damn thing when you want to! Like, this is crap compared to Tesla as far as this review goes

  6. While bullshit artist Elon likes to lie and make idiots believe Tesla can drive itself. Its system is way behind and hasn't even to date achieved Level 3 Autonomous Driving

  7. How are people so unaware in these comments? THIS IS A HUGE FIRST REVEAL IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY. It has these limitations since its NEW. It's a option if you want it or not. These limitations will be lessened when the programme is more ideal and reasonable to do so.

  8. Is this for real? My Kia k5 does a better job as long as I touch the steering wheel one a minute lol. I ran all the stuff it can’t do and I RAN to the comments lol

  9. This is what they consider level 3? This is a complete joke. FSD will drive me 60 miles a day from unmarked country lanes, through highways and to a downtown location to the parking lot with zero interventions (excluding parking lots).

  10. I thought Mercedes was 1 of the most advanced with self driving technology; this system looks terrible. My 21 Genesis G80 highway driving assist is 50x better than this level 3 system. It works great with traffic, no traffic, night/day, & hugs curves at 65 mph. It does have trouble in the rain since it can't really see the lines on the road, but other than that, it's great. My commute to work is between 35 – 55 minutes depending on traffic & I would say it does about 80% of the driving for me. Saying Mercedes was the 1st to levels 1, 2, & 3 doesn't really mean anything when comparing it to other softwares out there seeing what all level 3 is incapable of. Not sure what metrics Mercedes is using to rate their software, but if level 3 is their latest upgrade, they have a long road ahead of them to try & catch up to the competition.

  11. This is proof that Elon is right. You only need cameras and the more sensors you have, the greater the disruption can be with the system over analyzing. This is scary to me. You have to pay more attention than any other system as these required conditions can change so quickly!

  12. This system is really useless. Only up to 60 km/h, only for traffic jams, only for highway, it cannot change line, only in day light and for 2500 USD per year? Mercedes, send this system to the trash and buy a Tesla FSD. This system is terrible.

  13. So basically, once the car in front of you leaves, or traffic starts to ease up and goes faster, you basically have to take over. Sounds silly. Tesla FSD operates nearly everywhere, at night, in bad weather and city streets

  14. It's crazy how much better Tesla FSD is than this yet the media acts like this thing puts Tesla to shame. Tesla just doesn't claim level 3 yet but it drives the car well almost entirely, anywhere, at any time and under almost any condition. They just won't take the liability yet that comes by calling it level 3.

  15. Lmfao they call this level 3….but refuse to let tesla use FSD as level 3 even though tesla's FSD is decades beyond this system. this is basically a "theres a car in front of us, lets just tail it" its not even close to being anywhere near level 3. I had FSD drive me 100 miles at night, in the rain with no cars around. every single condition this system cannot do.

  16. Diamant of shamelessness of Mercedes is mentally ill how stupid and how behind they are that's why they're paying a lot of money to TVs and Commercial crap gone are the days of Mercedes and Nokia welcome Tesla
