I’m Anastasia and you can check out my blog anastasiablogger.com. I’ve been doing this full-time since 2018 but I can tell you for a fact the first year of blogging was the most difficult. You have to make a lot of very important choices while NOT knowing the whole picture and learning as you go.

So in this video, I’ll show you the 9 MAIN things you should do in the first year of blogging to set it up for success. And while all of these tips are very important, you really don’t want to miss tip #6 because it’s something you can’t fix later … but

First up, you need to install Google Analytics on your site.

It’s free! And at the same time, it is the most comprehensive website analytics tool, you don’t need to use any other WordPress plugins to track analytics. It takes 5 minutes to install Google Analytics code on the backend of your site. You can find lots of tutorials even here on YouTube and follow the steps, so I won’t go into the details now.

Once you have it installed, you will learn a lot about your website visitors – are they coming in from social media, or a search engine? How long are they hanging around? Which pages on your site are the most popular?
And remember, you HAVE to use Google Analytics because any ad network or potential sponsor will ask you for stats from your Google Analytics and NOT from any other odd plugin or analytics tool.

By the way, if you have Jetpack plugin on your blog to track visitors, get rid of it. It’s slowing down your site and not helping you learn anything more than Google Analytics could tell you.

Create a Google Search Console account for your site

This used to be called Webmaster Tools. When your blog is new, you can help Google find and index your pages faster by manually submitting your new pages in the URL tool in Search Console.
Here you will also see how your site’s doing in search results, and which keywords it is ranking for, and it gives you a heads-up if any issues might prevent Google from indexing your site.
I noticed that a lot of beginner bloggers have Google Analytics but never even heard about the Search Console, so I thought it was important to mention it as well.

Don’t Overspend in the First Year of Blogging
The truth is – and most people will not tell you this honestly and bluntly – well the truth is that you won’t make a lot of money in the first year of blogging, you’ll be lucky if you make anything at all.

  3. Starting a blog can feel overwhelming, but having a clear plan makes a huge difference. Focusing on consistency and learning along the way really helps. Also, using tools like BlogHandy can make managing a blog much easier, especially for beginners.

  5. I've had my blog well over a year now and I've grown it to 90 long and detailed blog posts, none of which are indexed on Google.

    I submitted my sitemap to Google Search Console in the beginning and resubmitted every couple of months in case that's why I'm not getting indexed. Within Google Search Console it only finds 24 pages which might be an indication that something is wrong with my coding? I've tried submitting my blog post URLs individually for indexing but nothing happens after months of waiting.

    I'm completely at a loss with what to try next or whether I should give up entirely and do another side hustle instead. I would want to post a lot more and invest in my own domain name to drop the blogspot extension but if no one's able to see my blog then what's the point in spending weeks writing another hundred posts and spending money on a domain I can't benefit from. I really need to get my blog monetized to help with my personal finances 😭

  9. I have a question?? I'm so confused by everything I read about blogging. I want to make money with my blog by affiliate marketing etc. I started my blog on WordPress and I didn't set it up with Bluehost or any other site. I kept it within WordPress. I have the Business plan and I pay $300.00 per year. Is that bad? Do I own it?

  27. I heard the blogging is dead due to a recent update of google? I mean I can see a lot of people claim that their website has traffic in millions but since the recent update the traffic is equal to "0" is that true?? What is your opinion?

  29. I love this and fully understand it. My only problem is, since I see this by almost all bloggers lately, is it necessary to sell a course or similar digital products to make income or is that just like a big bonus to have available? I have four e-books for sale but I will offer one free based off of your advice, however I'm not comfortable doing that yet and would like to get better with the tools and affiliate marketing/ ads. I've managed to get around 15-20 veiws my first 4 months then learned to leverage pinterest and some SEO (mind you I have 0 plug-ins running) and got a big spike in views but my content needs some work/ editing.

    Please review and provide me with some insight when you see this (anyone with experience)!

  51. What a great point about wasting a whole day on non-essential blogging activities. This is a common beginner blogger error. Stick to the basics of creating and connecting, follow pro blogger guidance and if you encounter technical obstacles, hire someone to fix it quickly.
